Talking flutes podcast

Clare speaks with the wonderful teacher, performer and founder and conductor of the 'Flutes Unlimited' flute choir and host of the 'Flutes du Soleil' summer flute course held in France Andrea Kuypers. During the podcast Andrea speaks about how she learnt from her own experiences of 'negative' teaching methods (knocking down to build back up) when she herself was at music college to focus her own students only on the positive aspects of learning and developing their own unique styles and musicality.

Testimonials

Andrea Kuypers

Andrea is an incredibly supportive and thorough teacher. She has a holistic approach to flute-playing, combining technique, tone and musicality while using elements of yoga to further develop one's breathing and posture. She has helped me realise that my body is responsible for the sound that I produce as much as (if not more than) my flute is!

Andrea Kuypers was my flute teacher for 7 years. She is a skilled musician and teacher with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Her approach to teaching is engaging and challenging, and she offers lots of encouragement. Andrea is enthusiastic, patient, understanding, and always makes learning interesting. I always looked forward to my flute lessons with Andrea, and would highly recommend her.

I got the chance to study with Andrea at Edinburgh Napier during a semester abroad, and I learned so much! I found her teaching to be very empowering because she helped me gain a stronger understanding of flute-playing fundamentals. Andrea brings together direct constructive criticism and perceptive teaching together very effectively. While she assigned lots of challenging work, I always felt like I could accomplish what she set forth for me because she is so supportive. I feel so grateful to have gotten to study with such a great teacher!

Andrea worked with us on a Joint Flute Day and concert. She leads with enthusiasm, energy and a sense of fun. Her attention to detail really helped us focus. The thing that struck me most was her commitment to the music, making sure that we phrased beautifully, listened together and gave helpful tips on technique along the way. We will definitely be working together in the future. Our group were buzzing afterwards!

We had a four hour workshop with Andrea. I was surprised how the time blew away as she, in a positive, fresh and encouraging way, guided us in posture and breathing technique. It really pushed my playing forward and released some energy that benefits my sound.

I really enjoyed the weekend in Dunkeld and, of course, I learned a lot and was reminded about stuff that I knew and had forgotten.  The venue was beautiful, the balance of the day suited me and the yoga was a good start to the day. I thought it was a great idea to finish the weekend with a concert, even after only two days' preparation. Peter did an amazing job with the catering! I particularly liked the fact that the evening meals were themed. Thank you again for your inspirational teaching and encouragement.

My main recollections are going to be the pleasure of playing with other people of a variety of abilities and ages and that lovely setting. Yoga was a great start to the day. I do a weekly exercise class which has some similar stretches- I must incorporate those more routinely into my days at home.  The food was very good. I’m not vegetarian but often choose it when I’m out. Meals were very pleasant social occasions too.

What a lovely weekend.  I really enjoyed everything.  As you know I was a bit worried about how my playing would fit,  but I felt just right, I coped and enjoyed playing the music, and saw some really great playing to aspire to. You gave me what I hadn't really realised I needed in terms of posture etc, and how to play. It also brought back what I learnt so many years ago, so gave me more confidence. I was a bit worried about bringing a piece but in the end I was glad I did. It was lovely to play it to others for once. The house was lovely, its position wonderful. The food, for me was just right. I am not vegetarian but I love veggie food and it was interestingly varied. I loved meeting everyone, such a lovely bunch of people. I can't thank you enough for giving me a lovely relaxing weekend away, getting me out of my covid rut and giving me a new confidence in playing my flute. Thank you. I would love to come again.
